Green Light Your Life
When asked how his life is, the adult son of an acquaintance invariable tells his father, “It’s all green lights.”
Which of us can say that?
We’re living in the middle of a worldwide epidemic. Another presidential election is a few weeks off with all of the spiritual, emotional and physical ugliness that now entails. The economy on the street is tanking while the Street is raking it in. We’re scouring for the coins to pay bills and making the choice whether to pay rent or doctors or whatever else.
We are just plain pooped.
We want to throw in the towel. Forget the Lakers just won the NBA title. Ignore the beautiful changing colors of autumn. Plaster over the fact that Canada has just celebrated another Thanksgiving, as will America in a month.
Life feels like it is more of a struggle for all of us than ever before.
And then this man says that his life is all green lights.
What is he thinking?
As much as any of us might want to be crabby and complain about his positive outlook, we have to recognize that this man has made a vitally important choice. In the midst of what we tell ourselves are the raging winds of hell all around us, this man has chosen heaven.
He’s right.
There were days when I felt exhausted beyond belief. Sometimes it seemed like all I did, day and night, were one exorcism or spirit sending after the next. People who don’t remember how to communicate with their angels wanted to sit and have me tell them what their angels were saying. All of that spiritual work is exhausting. Just as when I worked twelve or fifteen hour days seven days a week in business was exhausting.
I made in the decision to work in business.
I made the decision to accept my spiritual gifts. I chose to speak openly about my spiritual life, as much as I prefer privacy. It was the choice to accept living as I am supposed to live rather than living as I want. It is something I would rather red light than green light.
When I was a boy the angels told me this would happen. My grandmother attempted to prepare me for this. In private she would tell me that as an adult mine would be no ordinary life. Great things were expected of me. Things other boys and girls could not do. It sounded very mysterious in some strange adult way to me. Then her eyes would twinkle. It was how she told me everything is fine.
It was the same for me as an adult.
I was told again and again that it was time to green light the God work. Open up. Tell people. Let them in. Share the gifts.
Even with God, angels and humans all telling me to green light my life, it was a painful move to make for an otherwise intensely private person.
Doing spiritual work brings us all great joy. It is fulfilling. It involves prayer plus. Plus helping other people. Plus performing the daily tasks in taking care of oneself. Plus doing both the big and little things in life that need to be done. For yourself and the world at large.
When was the last time you gave yourself permission to relax? To sit down on a sofa or comfortable chair, put up your feet and close your eyes? You can, you know. It’s a big way to green light your spiritual growth.
I give you permission to stop.
Stop running. Stop worrying. Stop feeling like you have to be a human doing.
Just be.
Let yourself be quiet and calm. Give yourself the green light to hear your inner voice tell you it’s okay to do nothing.
Be.
For many of us it’s easier to tell ourselves we need to be caught up in the maelstrom of life. To live in the middle of the windstorm blowing apart our personal serenity.
That is a lie.
We all have permission to grow in our spiritual lives. To spread our spiritual wings. To let our minds and souls be calm.
It’s all a matter of choice.
We can have all green lights.
