I recommend John Boswell's Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality: Gay People in Western Europe from the Beginning of the Christian Era to the Fourteenth Century. Boswell was a Yale professor in history who offers the most complete, in depth and erudite dissertation of this matter that I have ever read.
